Hiring a Contractor

Please review the Hiring a Contractor (PDF) checklist  prior to hiring a contractor for any work, emergency or disaster work:

  • Check your contractor
    • Credentials - state licenses (see below)
    • Insurance - both liability and for poor workmanship
      • Call the insurance company to verify the policy
    • Past Customers: Call past customers
    • Better Business Bureau: Call the Better Business Bureau at 248-223-9400
  • Never pay for the entire job:
    • Before the work begins: Material deposit may be okay
    • Until all work is completed, inspected and approved
  • Have a valid written contract
    • This should spell out:
      1. Scope of the work
      2. Materials
      3. Time Frame to complete
    • Have your attorney review the document
  • Obtain permits as required
    • Contractor should obtain permits (not homeowner) if they are doing the work
    • Call Inspection at 734-466-2580 for questions with types of permits that may be needed
  • Licenses may be verified by either:
