Guns n' Gowns: A Civil War Encampment Event

Join the 17th Michigan Volunteer Regiment Company E for Guns n' Gowns on Saturday, Sept. 28 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 29 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This free living history event will take place at Greenmead Historical Park, 20501 Newburgh. 

There will be demonstrations of military camp life, drills, musket firing, medical practices, surgery, civilian life, period fashions, phrenology, an amazing display of historical reproduction flags, and much, much more! Stop in the village buildings to see some great exhibits and take a tour as well. This event is a great opportunity for students of all ages to learn about life during the Civil War era.

Civil War Luncheon 

Join the Livonia Historic Preservation Commission at the Civil War Luncheon on Saturday, Sept. 28 from 12-2 p.m. at the Alexander Blue House. This Civil War era luncheon will feature cuisine of the time period and a presentation by Master Gardener Jan Whitcomb “Growing Yesterday: Gardening in the Civil War Era.”

Tickets are $30 per person and available in advance only at the Greenmead Office, 20501 Newburgh Road. Please be prepared to pay with cash or check only. Proceeds from this event will benefit restoration efforts at our historic cemeteries.

Tour Sundays

Visit Greenmead on Sunday, October 6 and take a walk through Livonia's past. Self-paced tours are from 1 - 4 p.m. Begin at the Hinbern Gift Shop (located by the stop sign) for your admission pass. Admission is by donation this season. Docents will be in each building, including the Simmons-Hill House, to share information and answer questions.


Make Sunday a family day at the park! Pack a picnic lunch and enjoy the sun in our lovely Hill House gardens, then take a walk on the Virginia Matley Nature Trail, and finally tour our historic buildings to learn about Livonia's past.
