Michigan Car Seat Law Changes Info Graphic

Michigan child passenger safety laws are changing beginning April 2. Remember, the safest practice is to always make sure safety belts, car seats, and booster seats are snug and not too big.

Rear-Facing Car Seat Children have to be in rear-facing car seats until the child is either:
-At least one year old
-Under twenty pounds
Children have to be in a rear-facing car seat until the child is either:
-At least two years old
-Over the weight or height limit set by the manufacturer.
Front-Facing Car Seat Children under four must ride in a back seat if possible. If all backseats are taken by children under four, they may ride in a car seat in the front seat. Airbags must be turned off. Children have to be in a forward facing car seat, with an internal harness, until the child is either:
-At least five years old
-Over the weight or height limit by the manufacturer.
Booster Seat Children have to be in a belt-positioning booster seat, secured with a lap-to-shoulder safety belt, until the child is either:
-At least eight years old
-At least four feet nine inches tall

Back Seat and Buckled Children ages eight to fifteen must buckle up in any seat in a vehicle.
Age sixteen and up, people in front seats, both driver and passenger, must buckle up.
Children under thirteen years old, must:
-Use a properly fitting safety belt
-Be in the back seat, if there are back seats that are not all taken by other children.
