Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) involves a broad array of computer tools for mapping, managing geographically referenced data, and spatial analysis. Applications of GIS are many, and pervade many aspects of human activity. GIS industry experts estimate that more than two-thirds of all computerized data involve a spatial component such as a street address, road intersection, or other geographic reference.
The City of Livonia operates and maintains a Geographic Information System (GIS) to help manage its spatially referenced data. Livonia’s GIS database includes a complete parcel overlay for the city, storm drains and related features, water mains and related features, the sanitary sewer system, and a road right-of-way overlay. Street center line data and address look-up capabilities are also supported by the GIS database. In addition, full photo coverage of the city is available at approximately 6-inch resolution. Attribute data for the various data overlays is entered through the City’s computer system.
Attribute data routinely used in conjunction with the GIS includes property and owner address information, tax information, and zoning codes. Attribute data for the GIS are updated on a monthly schedule, while the parcel and other overlays are updated on a 6-month schedule.
